Jesus said to Simon “Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch. Simon said in reply, ‘Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower my nets. When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were tearing. They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Lk5:4-8
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Mt4:19
General Reflection:
In this Gospel of Luke, we often missed some minute details.
First, was Simon’s brief hesitation to do what Jesus asks him to do i.e., to lower the nets to the deep water for a catch. This is because, Simon, his brother Andrew and his companions, John and James, the sons of Zebedee are experienced and skilled fishermen. Fishing is their occupation, whereas Jesus is not.
Second, Simon’s hesitation was only brief, and he did exactly what Jesus told him to do. He obeyed.
Personal Reflection:
How often do I hesitate to follow God’s will, to do what He is asking me to do? Do I hesitate only briefly, or do I often rely on my own skills and experience and simply repeat what I have been doing before? In our CLPs, do I just apply the same methods, techniques or ways of inviting people to the CLPs? Do I hesitate to try other means even if my leaders ask me to do because I have done it many times and therefore, I consider myself more qualified or experienced?
As a leader, in conducting my household meetings and assemblies, am I creative and try other things to inspire my members?
Third, they called for help.
Personal Reflection:
Am I humble and ask for help from my leaders when I am struggling in my service? Or do I just continue my usual ways and still expect things to improve?
Fourth, Simon Peter fell on his knees and acknowledged that he is a sinful man.
Personal Reflection:
Do I humble myself before the Lord especially after I doubt or disobeyed Him? Do I respect and obey my leaders?
